The Little Things

A plane flying overhead. The sun shining brightly through my windshield. Lights flickering over my kitchen island. Andy Samberg's humor. Rainbows and hummingbirds. Discovering a new rock shop or hunting for seashells. This list of seemingly disparate things holds one very intimate commonality for me: each item reminds me of my late husband.

Those of us who have lost someone beloved understand the idea that simple, everyday items can bring on powerful memories of the dearly departed. Seeing the object that reminds you of your person may evoke visceral feelings one day, while only bringing about wistful nostalgia on another. Either way, through the passage of time, I have learned to be grateful for these emotional triggers as they help reassure me that I will never forget Brad. Since today would have been Brad's 53rd birthday, I am especially grateful for these memories. In this vein, when my phone alerted me to the significance of this day during my Target shopping trip, I shed a few tears and then smiled to myself as I continued pushing my cart through the aisles.
